Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Biennial or perennial herbs from a taproot.

Stems: Stems usually coarse, long, unbranched or virgately branched.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Leaves in a basal rosette and with alternate cauline ones. Sessile and clasping or somewhat decurrent on the stem. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in simple racemes or spikes, occasionally in congested panicles. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Calyx deeply 5-lobed, the lobes equal. Corolla slightly zygomorphic, yellow, occasionally white or purple, rotate, 5-lobed, upper 2–lobes slightly shorter than and overlapping the lower 3 lobes in bud, the tube short. Stamens 5, usually all fertile; filaments usually villous, the lower pair sometimes glabrous; anthers monothecal. Ovary superior, 2-carpellate, with as many cells, ; stigma capitate.

Fruit: Capsules ovoid to globose; septicidal. Seeds numerous; obconical; with thick; undulate; longitudinal ribs; sometimes anastomosing and forming a reticulate pattern.
